FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart Cub Ice Hockey, ranked 11th, celebrated their seniors’ and graduate students’ final home game with a 6-3 win over Marist College, ranked 8th, on Saturday. The Pioneer’s struck first when junior, Frank Vetere, scored on an assist from senior Rocky Coviello. Marist scored just 10 seconds later to tie it. SHU added a pair of goals from junior Jack Pardue before the end of the first period. The Red Foxes scored a couple of their own in the second period to pull within one. Senior Rocky Coviello picked up his 2nd and 3rd points of the game with 2 goals in the third to stop any momentum from Marist. Grad student, Scott Martin, sealed with win with a goal in the 17th minute.
SHU finished the regular season with a road trip to #3 University of New Hampshire, falling 5-2. UNH put 2 goals on the board in the first before junior Jack Pardue ended the period, scoring with 10 seconds remaining. The Pioneers fought hard in the second period, getting a goal from graduate student Ryan Lynagh on assists from grad student, Leander Schulter, and freshman, Michael Zdanowicz, to tie the score, but UNH proved too tough on their home ice, adding another in the second and 2 in the third.
SECHL playoffs will take place Friday, February 16th – Sunday, February 18th in Danbury, CT. #3 SHU opens play with a matchup against #6 Siena College Friday at 6:10pm. SHU holds the advantage in the regular season head-to-head, taking both games from Siena this season 5-4 and 6-2.
