Fairfield, CT- This weekend, #18 Sacred Heart University went 1-1-1 in 3 conference road games. This brings their conference record in the SECHL 3-5-1 so far this season.
Friday night, senior goaltender Brandon Rozzi secured the shutout when the Pioneers took down Army 3-0. The game was scoreless going into the second period before senior Frank Vetere found the back of the net to put SHU up 1-0. The team came out strong in the second period, adding a goal from senior captain Jack Pardue. Junior Drew Homola picked up his second goal of the season and the defense held strong to take home the win and sweep the season series with the Black Knights.
Saturday, SHU took on Siena College in their first matchup of the season. For the third time this season, SHU scored within the first minute of the game when Pardue got his second goal of the weekend. Vetere followed to give SHU a 2-0 lead. Siena scored to end the period, and then scored twice more in the second. Freshman Alex Welch scored with just 17 seconds left to tie the game going into the third. It became a battle between goaltenders in the third and overtime periods, as both teams had breakaways but were unable to score for a 3-3 final.
The Pioneers traveled to Troy, NY to close out the weekend against #7 RPI. The Engineers were first on the board with a goal in the eleventh minute. Sophomore Mike Zdanowicz scored his first goal of the game to tie the score 1-1 at the end of the first period. The second period was all SHU, as Zdanowicz scored again 1:38 into the period. Only 6 minutes later, he netted another goal, this one on a Pioneer power play, to complete the hat trick. Going into the third, SHU was looking to shut out RPI for the second period in a row, starting out strong on the penalty kill. But RPI proved too tough, adding 2 goals before scoring the game winner with under a minute remaining in regulation.
This coming weekend, the Pioneers hit the road again for their last games before the Thanksgiving holiday. SHU heads to New Hampshire for 2 games against ranked opponents.
