Rugby Set to Open Season Saturday at Coast Guard Academy

Fairfield, CT-  Sacred Heart X-Men Rugby will open their season this Saturday at the Coast Guard Academy. The team joins a new conference this season, New England Wide Collegiate Rugby Conference, where they will be squaring off against teams like University of Vermont and University of Hartford in Tier 1. Along with a change in conference, SHU welcomes Dave Lyme to the coaching staff. A native of Australia, Coach Lyme comes to SHU from the Fairfield Yankees RFC, where he served as the head coach for over 3 years, including the 2016 Men’s D3 National Championship team.

The team’s got some key returners this year, with captains Jack Connelly and Mike Vozzella leading the backline. Seniors Ryan Welby and Anthony Sarno are looking better than ever and are ready to make an impact in their final season. Graduate student, Dante Cardone, brings a veteran presence to the front row, while sophomore, Ryan Schwab secured his spot at scrumhalf in the preseason.

The X-Men are coming off another impressive year in the Tri-State Rugby Conference, advancing to the conference championship for a second consecutive season. They also took second place at the Beast of the East Collegiate Rugby Tournament in April, SHU’s best finish at the tournament since they won the championship in 2012. The X-Men are looking forward to carrying that momentum into the Fall 2018 season. To keep up with all the excitement, follow Sacred Heart University Club Sports on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
