Fairfield, CT – Director of Club Sports Ray Mencio announced the hiring of Tom Barnouw as the Ultimate Frisbee Head Coach. Barnouw is a two-time Ultimate Frisbee World Champion (Seattle Sockeye, 1997 & KWA, 2002) and is a nominee for the USA Ultimate Hall of Fame. He has been coaching the Fairfield Ludlowe/Warde high-school team since 2015, winning the CT High School State Championship in 2016, and is very excited to join the Sacred Heart team and to be coaching at the college level. For the first time, SHU Ultimate will be playing in USAU sanctioned events and will be competing in the College Series Championships beginning in April.
Director of Club Sports Ray Mencio is excited to have Barnouw joining SHU, “We are incredibly fortunate to add a coach with as much experience playing and coaching as Coach Barnouw. He is a great ambassador for both Ultimate and for Sacred Heart University.”
The Ultimate Frisbee program has been in the infant stages of returning to campus. Last year, the team was run by students, starting with Josh Belluche, Joe Samilenko and Evan Sigrouos, and they have grown into a full-fledged club team this year. Team practices started last semester and the team is well under way for the spring season.
