Seniors DeMarco and Barry Finish Career With 4th Place Finish In NWVCL Blue Division Championships

Fairfield, CT-  On Sunday 4/14/2019 the Women’s Club Volleyball team hosted the NWVCL Blue Division Championships at the Pitt Center in their final tournament of the year.

In the first match of pool play Sacred Heart faced Providence College.  Sacred Heart started out strong winning the first set 25-22.  In the second set Providence got an early lead and Sacred Heart struggled to recover, ultimately losing 22-25.

Significant Stats:

Freshman Tara Hagerman – 5 kills, 14 digs

Sophomore Julia Tavolilla – 6 kills, 7 digs, 2 assists

Junior Christina Sanciangco – 20 digs, 1 assist

Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 2 kills, 1 dig, 17 assists

After tying with Providence, Sacred Heart was hungry for a win in the second match against Rowan University.  Sacred Heart easily took the first set 25-19, but once again fell short in the second set losing 19-25.

Significant Stats:

Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 2 digs, 12 assists

Junior Christina Sanciangco – 1 kill, 12 digs

Freshman Tara Hagerman – 4 kills, 8 digs

The third match of pool play was against Rutgers- B.  Sacred Heart got off to a very slow start and allowed Rutgers to get an early lead.  Rutgers easily took the first set beating SHU 15-25.  Sacred Heart rallied in the second set, and despite an early deficit Sacred Heart won 25-21.

Junior Christina Sanciangco – 2 kills, 21 digs

Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 5 digs, 25 assists

Senior Kristina DeMarco – 4 kills, 10 digs

The final match of pool play was against top ranked Rochester.  Sacred Heart took an early lead but at the end of the first set Rochester rallied and Sacred Heart fell 25-27.  In the second set, Sacred Heart was neck and neck with Rochester.  Unfortunately injury took out Sacred Heart’s libero half way through the second set, and Sacred Heart fell 25-16.

Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 1 dig, 16 assists

Sophomore Julia Tavolilla – 4 kills, 2 digs

Senior Kristina DeMarco – 4 kills, 2 digs

After a disappointing end to pool play, Sacred Heart ended up placing 4th in pool play, coming in with just 5 points less than Rowan, not advancing to playoffs.  Despite not getting the results we wanted, Sacred Heart had one of the most successful seasons in club history, and hosted our first ever tournament.  A big thank you to everyone who helped make the tournament run smoothly!
