SHU Club Ice Hockey went 1-1 over the weekend, falling to #1 William Patterson University 6-2 before defeating Bryant University 7-4 in their first home game of the semester.
WPU got on the board early with a goal in the first minute of the game. SHU was able to make adjustments with back and forth play before graduate student Scott Martin tied the game with a goal halfway through the first period. WPU scored 2 more goals in the first before being shut out in the second by junior goaltender Brandon Rozzi. SHU added a goal to pull within one when senior Rocky Coviello scored with a little over a minute remaining in the period. The third period started with SHU having the momentum, but they were unable to complete the upset before falling 6-2 in regulation.
SHU had their first home game of the semester the following day, taking on Bryant University. SHU struck first when graduate student Mike Vaiano got the Pioneers on the board. Bryant was able to tie the game with less than a minute left in the first period. Bryant added 2 more goals in the second before SHU was able to take a commanding lead in the second half. Sophomore Andrew Demmings picked up his first goal of the season and the Pioneers added 3 more before intermission. Junior Jack Pardue started the scoring in the third, followed by another by the Bulldogs. Vaiano sealed the win for the Pioneers with his second of the game. Vaiano has played exceptional the last couple of weeks, compiling 10 points over 4 games, including a 5 point performance against RPI on January 20th.
