Worchester, MA- SHU Ice Hockey A played a home/away series with the College of Holy Cross over the weekend. The Pioneers were looking to hand the Crusaders their first loss of the season Friday night. Within the first 3 minutes of the game, freshman Will Horrigan picked up the first goal of his collegiate career off assists from fellow freshmen Mike McGovern and Shane Wilkinson. Holy Cross would add a goal of their own before SHU captain Jack Pardue found the back of the net and they headed to intermission up 2-1. Holy Cross tied the game in the first 5 minutes of the second period. SHU added a goal from senior Frank Vetere to gain back the lead and never look back. Pardue added his second goal of the game in the third period, securing the win 4-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
The 2 teams met again on Sunday night, this time in Worchester. The Pioneers came ready to play with sophomore Ryan Gawricki scoring only 29 seconds into the game. Holy Cross scored five minutes into the first period. SHU scored what should have been the go ahead goal, but the officials called it off and they went into the first intermission tied. SHU came out strong again, when Vetere scored to start the second period. Holy Cross answered with another and again they were tied starting the last period. Vetere picked up his second goal of the game, and fifth point of the weekend, when he scored a goal to start the third. The Pioneers held off the Crusaders for the next 11:30 before Holy Cross tied it at three. After a scoreless overtime period, SHU came away with a tie. Senior goaltender Brandon Rozzi played all 120 minutes of the weekend for the Pioneers, picking up 52 saves. That brings his season total to 253 saves and a 0.917 save percentage over the first 8 games of the season.
Ice Hockey A will be home this upcoming weekend, Friday November 2nd against Army and Saturday November 3rd against RPI. Both games are conference matchups for the Pioneers. Games will begin at 8pm and are played at Wonderland of Ice 123 Glenwood Ave, Bridgeport, CT.
