Fairfield, CT- SHU Men’s Rugby has released their fall 2019 NEWCRC conference schedule. The Xmen open play on the road against Westfield State University on September 21st. They have their home opener against the University of Vermont the following weekend, September 28th. Both teams will be looking to start the season out strong with this rematch of last year’s conference championship. Next, they host Boston University, who makes the jump from Tier II to Tier I this year, followed by a road game against in-state rival Southern Connecticut State University. Their final home game will be against Coast Guard, before a late season bye week. Conference play concludes on November 2nd at Quinnipiac University. USA Rugby National Championships are set to begin with the play in game on November 16thand Regional competition on November 16th. In reference to his first season leading the program, Head Coach Dave Lyme said, “I am very excited for the upcoming season. We have some very tough opponent’s on our schedule , but I have been very happy with how our most recent match played out this spring. We have a tremendous amount of potential and athletic ability and certainly have what it takes to compete at the top level week in week out and we will set our goals to match that for the fall”.
2019 will mark SHU’s second season in the NEWCRC. Last year, SHU took second place in the conference, dropping the championship match to University of Vermont and will look to do one better this fall, with the conference champion getting an automatic bid into the USAR regional round. Under the new leadership of Dave Lyme, the Xmen will be making significant changes while bringing back leadership in key positions with rising sophomores Bryan Calton and Aaron Such and rising senior Jack Connelly.
