SHU Sailing Results Show Promise at Salve Sunday Regatta
Newport, RI-  The Sacred Heart Sailing Team headed to Newport, RI this past Sunday to compete in the, blustery, one day Salve Sunday Invite Regatta held at Sail Newport. 10 teams and 20 boats competed in the 10 race event in Brenton's Cove of Newport Harbor.
Sophomore transfer Brian Hayes ('21) with Wynn Simmons ('21) crewing held the "A" division spot while Aleix Monomany Balaguer ('23), new to SHU and the team this spring from Spain, was joined by Laura Scheideler ('21) on the "B" division team. All 20 boats raced together in one start (combined division regatta) with the morning and afternoon sessions each featuring 5 races.
With several top 10 finishes the two teams ended the morning session solidly in mid fleet with Hayes/Simmons just a few points ahead of Balaguer/Scheideler in the overall standings. The afternoon session SHU's "A" Division skipper, Hayes, gave up the helm to Simmons and crew substitute Julia Caiazzo ('19). Hayes said, of his choice to sit the afternoon sessions, "It's important to make sure the entire team gets as many chances to compete as possible. Wynn has been a steady part of the team and is committed to getting better and Julia is making time to sail as she finishes up her time at SHU. It just made sense for the two of them to get in some racing and they did really well in the challenging conditions and finished up with a great result in a very competitive last race".
The lunch time also provided just the break for team newcomer Aleix, with Laura, to regroup and focus and see what they needed to do to improve their results. A top Laser sailor from Spain, Aliex has small boat sailing experience but he had only 2 days of practice in the FJ sailboats and this was his first collegiate regatta. The short break worked as Aleix and Laura went back on the water after lunch and posted scores of 1,3,14,2,10 in the afternoon session pulling them up to 6th overall and 3rd in "B" Division.
Overall the team posted a respectable 7th place overall in one of the few spring events scheduled for the club this semester. Thanks to Salve Regina University and Coach John Ingalls for hosting and running a fabulous event.
