New Haven, CT- On Sunday 2/24/2019 the Women’s Club Volleyball team competed in their second tournament of the spring at the University of New Haven. In the first match of pool play Sacred Heart faced Providence College. Sacred Heart got off to a slow start in the first set ultimately losing 23-25. In the second set, Sacred Heart continued to struggle against a powerful line of Providence hitters and lost 19-25.
Freshman Tara Hagerman – 4 kills, 1 ace, 2 digs
Sophomore Julia Tavolilla – 3 kills, 1 ace
Junior Christina Sanciangco – 12 digs
After a rough defeat in the first match, Sacred Heart came out strong in the second match against New Haven. Sacred Heart had a commanding lead throughout the first set, easily winning 25-15. The second set started out with a back and forth but Sacred Heart was able to pull ahead late in the game winning 25-20.
Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 2 kills, 2 digs, 18 assists
Sophomore Carissa Scheier – 6 kills, 1 ace
Freshman Tara Hagerman – 8 kills, 7 digs
The third match of pool play was against WPI. Sacred Heart struggled to find its rhythm early on in the first set, but managed to hold off WPI, winning 25-22. In the second set, Sacred Heart continued to struggle but Sacred Heart held them off winning 25-23.

Freshman Daphne Schiffman – 2 aces, 20 assists
The final match of pool play was against Vermont. The first set started out slowly for Sacred Heart, allowing Vermont to take a commanding lead early. However, when the score was 13-24, Sacred Heart finally found their rhythm and came back strong, holding off Vermont’s victory for 5 points. Unfortunately, the effort was too late and Vermont took the first game defeating SHU 18-25. However, in the second set, Sacred Heart continued their fiery streak and took a commanding lead early on. After letting Vermont come back a little bit, Sacred Heart defeated them 25-20, securing a place in the playoffs.

After placing second in pool play, Sacred Heart went on to the semi-finals facing Yale. Sacred Heart was eager to defeat Yale after barely losing to them last weekend. Sacred Heart came out strong in the first set, defeating Yale 25-23. However, in the second set, things started to go badly for Sacred Heart and Yale got a commanding lead. Sacred Heart continued to fight, but fell 22-25. The third set, to 15 points was a back and forth with both teams having commanding leads and then losing them. After a long day of playing, Sacred Heart was unable to hold them off and lost 14-16.

Despite not getting the result hoped for in the Yale game, Sacred Heart had an extremely successful day. Sacred Heart placed third overall in the tournament, giving us our highest finishing place of the year. Sacred Heart had outstanding performances by junior Christina Sanciangco (41 digs 3 aces), freshman Tara Hagerman (25 kills, 26 digs, 2 aces) and freshman Daphne Schiffman (66 assists, 4 kills, 4 digs).
